Physical to Virtual: Ben Apostol

For my Physical to Virtual project, the first couple of things that I scanned were graphic tee shirts. Both items contain text and logos, and are going to be used throughout my project to represent me. Another item I scanned was the front and back of a car themed air freshener. I also included in my scans some of my astronomy notes to represent school, and chose two to show both writing notes as well as diagrams from class. The next item I scanned was a car sticker that goes along with the air freshener. I chose a couple of other stickers as well as a piece of infusion tape to represent my medical condition in my project.

Now that I am able to scan different sized objects by changing the resolution, I may be able to scan a few more articles of clothing that have meaningful designs. The brands of the clothes that were scanned are each trying to give a theme to my project. Along with the option of being able to scan more stickers that would show up well on my project with the right resolution I could also scan more visually interesting pieces of work that represent my professional and school life. All of the items that I want to scan each have a theme weather it is the brand or the style of the item or logo. The objects may not have meaning by themselves but when put together in my project and manipulated through Photoshop, the viewer would get a better idea about me as a person and creator.

The object that I decided to scan was a Victoria Secret bag. I decided to chose this item because it was a larger item that I could use as a background over all for my whole project. My Victoria Secret bag is black, nut the grey glitter hat it has makes it look more bright, which i want to use as a background because I feel like that would make my other objects pop out since they are brighter than the background. I chose this theme because since I always wear black, I always try wear something bright so it is noticed by other people, and it stands out most, and another way to see it is with my personality. I decided to choose my items based off of things that describe me as a person. When I looked through my room, I found stickers, clothing, frames, and other stuff that can define me as a person. One of the objects was a sticker that said ” I love Immigrants” which is part of my identity as I came to the US as an immigrant and from immigrants. I am also really big on advocating for other immigrants, not just myself, and the sticker also included a lot of flags from different places, and it was very bright and colorful, which I could say that defines my personality.

If I could scan another item, I would scan a picture of my family because they have played the most important role in my life which has helped shape the person that I am today. I would consider them to be the background to my collage and I would be the bright object in the front. Thanks to them I am able to achieve my goals and thanks to their help I am able to go out in the world and do great things. This would be an important part to my collage.

The materials that I brought to the CDSC for our first scanning day was a tea and pink lemonade label because those were some of the drinks that I have had recently. I brought a book written by my favorite author, Sarah J Maas. I brought a few Pura Vida bracelets because they are one of my favorite things to wear and collect. I brought two of my favorite teas, guava and earl grey. Lastly I brought a Dutch Brothers Coffee sticker because it is an interest my sisters and I share and it is one of the only things that we bond on. I also brought a wrapper of my favorite chocolate, dark chocolate with raspberry filling, and I brought some frog gummies. I thought they would look cool with one side being transparent and the other being opaque.

Now that I have scanned something I was thinking about bringing in more things with texture and patterns. I realized that most of the stuff that I brought on Tuesday was very plain and boring compared to some thing that the other students brought textural wise. I also think that I will try to find something with a complex design and try to use it as a background for my comic collage, or possibly as a border. My friend had recently loaned me his Dungeons and Dragons book and some of the pages have fantasy like pictures with a sort of torn page look to it that I found interesting, so I want to scan that and see if that could work for something.

I think that these things will be interesting to use for my digital comics collage because of the texture and the fantasy feel of it. I wanted to make something that looked like it came from a dream or perhaps a fantasy. I really like video games and anything fantasy, so I wanted to incorporate that into my comic to maybe this older, renaissance feeling. I wanted to make it look kinda like an old treasure map and create the feeling of excitement and adventure.

For the first day of scanning I brought a sketchbook, a candy wrapper, some clothes, textures from my jacket, and a note form my sister. For the second day of scanning I brought in more sketches, textures and a t shirt design. I am hoping that some of the sketches will make for characters in the collage (Like the Optimus Prime sketch above) and for the the textures and designs to make for backgrounds or panels. I know now that Resolution plays a big role in how you should scan an object. Generally if the object I scan is large I want to keep it large so that I can use it as a background texture. Scanning was interesting and I hope to learn how to use it even more efficiently.

Scan of Airpods

My goal for this project is to use objects that help to immerse the reader in the story I will be telling in the comic. I like how the scan turned out; it really shows the dimension and shadowing of the object in a detail that is very visually appealing. I think that I would like to scan additional digital technology into a singular collage; one half a scattered mess of the different items and random assortment of strings, the other more uniformly presented with a woven background. It’s going to represent how technology can be really haphazard and disorganized if you’re not careful, even if it’s supposed to “connect” us. I found that even if you plan on making the objects small, it’s probably best to scan them at a high resolution to err on the side of caution.

I recently bought this T-Shirt online from a community on Reddit known as /r/StreetwearStartup. In this community, small indie clothing startups share their designs and seek critique. I really enjoyed this design and wanted to support the brand as well so I decided to buy it. I love the colors as well as the graphic and the text makes me wonder how wolves are different. The scan didn’t come out perfect but it is very high resolution, and I kind of like the wrinkled rough look that came out. I think this will make a great center piece for the collage.

I’ve been playing guitar since the 6th grade and love it. Anybody who knows anything at guitar will know what the next scanned item is. A capo is used to change the pitch of the guitar by essentially changing the length of the neck. Essentially, it’s a way to tune up all of the strings the same amount. This thing is a guitars best friend and is always around. I’ve had this one for probably 10 years now and it’s held up fantastic despite some minor cosmetic chips that I think add character. I’ve always been of the mindset that if your guitar gear isn’t getting some wear and tear damage, then you aren’t playing enough.

Scanning opened my eyes to how resolution works and just how detailed things can be. It’s an interesting phenomenon that we can observe these pixels in such great detail but can’t seem to recreate them once they’re gone. The whole concept of ppi or dpi is an interesting one to me as the difference between just 72 and 300 is so noticeable in both quality and file size. Before the scanning assignment, the only time I’d ever seen dpi is in relation to computer mice and sensitivity.

To the CDSC, I brought items that I thought would look interesting scanned on a digital level; as well as items that I feel that represent me and my life. On the first day, I brought in a tag from one of my favorite clothing stores, a lipstick because I love makeup, a ring with my favorite quote, and a gum wrapper (because it was shiny and I chew gum every single day). After some consideration as well as watching an example of using the scanner, I decided I might need to alter the items I was going to scan. All of my original items were quite 3 dimensional and round. I realized that items of this nature may perhaps be very difficult to scan, or look distorted or unrecognizable under a scanner. I needed to do some more planning.

After putting more thought into what I could bring, I came up with: A Polaroid photo of my best friend and I, my designer wallet that represents my love for fashion (plus I bring it everywhere), a WSU “Cougars” t-shirt representing where I go to school, and One of my favorite hair scrunchies.

Above is my Polaroid photo that I scanned. This photo was an ideal item to scan in my opinion as it is flat, small and manageable. Other flat items such as the wallet were easy as well. One item that I am excited to scan is the WSU shirt. The shirt has a waffle material and a screen printed logo. I think that this scan will provide a good example of textural space even though it will be digitized. I am going to try to have a variety of different textures scanned for my project 1 to make it aesthetically pleasing and eye-catching. Between shiny, smooth, silky, leather, metal and many more, I am hoping they all come together and flow while being vastly different.

For the first scanning day I brought a hand made card from my sister, jewelry, a head scarf, a lanyard, polaroid photos, and some wrappers. I tried to find items to scan that would have interesting textures as well as items that had personal significance for me. I want to try to scan more textural items now that I understand scanning. I think the items I scanned will help show who I am. On the first day of scanning I only scanned the “get well soon” card that my sister gave me. I decided to scan this because I loved the colors and hand writing, and it has personal significance to me. I bumped the pixel count up from 300 because I wanted to enlarge the photo in photoshop. I scanned the outsides and insides of the card because I wanted to include all of the different aspects of the card.

I decided to scan a drawing I made of my first Dungeons and Dragons character known as Candu Man. I chose this to be scanned as it is special to me and i really liked the sketchy look that came from the pens. I also liked the size of the image and the fact that it filled up a large portion of paper. I made sure that the pixel count was higher than 300 because I knew that I would have to shrink the picture down as it was quite large and I wouldn’t be using the original size. Seeing that scanning can capture so much detail I look forward to scanning more objects with texture such as cloth and shirts. I love that scanning objects captures so much more than what taking a picture would do. I have a piece of cloth and a hat that I would like to scan. Using this scan in my project will be interesting as it is so large so i will be able to pick and choose the parts that I want to use. Dungeons and Dragons is now something that I regularly play and that is why i decided to pick this as my first scan.
