The materials I brought in for the first day were a sun hat, a Taco Bell gift card and a pair of swimming goggles. I chose these items because I liked the way that they looked and they had somewhat importance to me. I would wear the sun hat for hiking and stuff, while the goggles I would wear whenever I needed to go swimming. And the Taco Bell gift card just looks interesting.

Now that I know about resolution and scanning I think I am going to bring in more interesting texture and color materials and also look at specific features of an item. The sun hat that I have has some buttons with textures and lettering on it that I find interesting so I want to explore what I can do with that. I am going to do this because I want to go more in depth and look at the features of an object closer and get a sense of what makes the item feel the way it does. For example, the Taco Bell gift card has two different ways of viewing it in the physical world based off of how you look at it. When it is tilted in one direction the lights brighten and the bell has a shine, while when you look at it in a different way you see the lights are turned off. This actually shows up in the scan when you flip the card. One side it is lit up and one side it is not. I thought that was really cool.

I think that focusing on the texture and physical features as well as colors for my comics collage. I like the physical aspects shown in virtual forms because it gives a sort of depth to the image and makes the person viewing it a sort of perspective or guess of what the object would feel like.

My WSU scrunchie that I made, scanned 09/13/2109

On the first day of the CDCS, I brought a sticker, a polaroid picture, and a piece of fabric. After I left the class, I decided that those weren’t the best things to use for this project. When I got back to my room, I decided that I should change it up and pick other things for the collage. But the one thing that I really want to add into the collage are items that have different types of textures. It could be from a hair scrunchie, edge of a quarter, to a crinkled piece of homework.

I decided to pick my Washington State University scrunchie that I made for a part of my collage because of the texture. I wanted to add some texture effects to the collage to make it more realistic for the reader. I thought if I added texture to the collage it would add more of a realistic feeling for the reader by looking at the wrinkles in the fabric, you could some what imagine the texture of the scrunchie. I tried multiple times to try and get the blank circle in the middle of the scrunchie as big as I could, so in the future I could try and find something to put in the middle of the scrunchie.

In addition to the scrunchie, I have no idea what I’ll be digitizing. At the moment, I’m trying to figure out what kind of message I’m trying to get out of for the collage. I have different things that I want to work into the collage, but I have no idea how I’m going to do that. I have an idea for the collage to make it something like “What you would find in a college students dorm room” or “What you would find in a college students backpack”.

DTC PROJECT 2

Homer’s The Iliad was written by Homer for the purpose of telling ancient Greco-Roman histories. I picked it up at the CUB.

The first day we visited the CDSC I brought with me a Crimzone Pass, Homer’s the Iliad, and one of my baseball hats. I really thought the crimzone pass would be a very interesting addition to my collage because it was so colorful. It also seemed like a collage in itself. It was also very small so I thought it would work a lot better than other larger things. Homer’s Iliad just had a really cool looking cover photo. Which featured an all matte black background with a single greco roman helmet in the middle. I also bought the book used so it had a ton of texture that looked like it would be very interesting. I was interested to see if the scanner would actually pick up all the markings on the cover photo. Finally the baseball hat I brought with me is an all grey Washington State University hat. I really like the stitching of the baseball hat and I thought it would fit in with my other items. I think as I scan more things the bigger picture will begin to develop more, but as for now I think this is a really good start. I ended up using my crimzone pass and Homer’s the Iliad because when I scanned all three of my items these two looked the best. Which i’m guessing is because they laid perfectly flat inside the scanner.  That being said the resolution and lighting just looked far superior in regards to the baseball hat. I’m really happy with how these photos turned out though. I plan on taking out all of the font inside the two photos. I like the background of the Crimzone pass because it is faded and is a splash of color. Homer’s Iliad features a really cool Greco-Roman helmet which I think is really as well.

On the first day that we visited the CDSC, I brought a bag filled with a dollar bill, a printed out picture with a label that says August, a quarter, and a wreath made up of paper circles. I ended up scanning all of those items, because they all fit in the scanner.

Scanned by Joseph Gardner, September 2019.

I will also consider scanning my name tag for work. However, when I scan things with white borders. When I scanned things with white borders, they showed up okay but when I tried to make them into a png, it made it harder for me to make it into a png. The quick select tool makes it so the background is selected along with the white part of the image.

I’m also thinking about scanning some watercolor. I really like the texture of the paper. Watercolor could add some depth and color to the project. If I did add watercolor, I would use more warm colors to contrast the blues that are part of the project so far.

I like the way that my project is turning out so far. I’m going to try to do a summertime theme, with the comic transitioning from the end of the summer and the beginning of the school year. I am still unsure of how I will utilize text. I like the color scheme that I have so far, with blues, greens and the occasional yellow.

I think that the materials that I scanned so far will be interesting for my project because they are mostly consisting of paper, but there is variation between the textures of the paper. I’m also thinking of zooming in close to one of August paper, and using the dots that appear when using CMYK to create a sort of backdrop. I want to experiment with proportions, and make it so some of the small things are big, and the big things are small.

Blog 2: Physical to Virtual – Jack Kay

For my blog this week, I chose to just pick things out of my pocket that I had. I used my keys which have many other uses other than just to drive and I just had matches on me. I thought the matches would be cool to see if the camera could pick up the individual matches and it worked fairly well. After the presentation, I am going to look for some fabrics to bring in and also some oddly shaped materials. I think oddly shaped materials would make the collage look very cool. Also, I feel like bringing in different papers for backgrounds and adding shadows if possible would look really cool.

This is the set of keys that I bring everyday. I wanted the picture to see more of the depth of the keys, but it kind of looks three-dimensional. The picture came out fairly clear and there was also a lot of positions for the keys I could work with. The keys themselves were not as reflective as how I would have imagined, but I think that that is for the better.

In the next use of these scanners, I will be bringing different materials which have different textures and different sizes. The matches were a good call because of how many different textures are on one object. It was interesting to see if the camera was going to make it come out clearly or not.

This digitalization showed me that even the simplest reflective material will reflect after flash. The image looks rough and raw with no added filters or editing which I do like. I prefer no added editing because then the image looks like how it would in everyday life.

I hope to actually improve these photos when working on my collage though. And bring in Raw photos into the digitalized world. I think it will be an awesome opportunity to mix the two worlds: Both Physical and Virtual.

What materials did you bring to the CDSC for our first scanning day? Now that you know something about scanning and resolution, what additional items will you consider digitizing? Why do you think they will be interesting to use for your digital comics collage? Remember, Project 1: Comics Collage should reference physical, textural space, even though you will execute most of the work in virtual space as you learn beginning, intermediate, or advanced skills in Adobe Photoshop.

The first attempt at making the scan less bright.

In the Avery Computer Lab, I decided to scan a crumpled piece of lined paper in order to put my comic on top of in order to give it a more “sloppy” or “messy” feel to the final piece. Alongside this, I chose my wooden mechanical pencil in order to include in the comic as well; I’m hoping this will give the collage comic some kind of depth, where it seems like the pencil is resting on top of the comic itself. Alongside this, I’m hoping to also scan other items I use in my art making process like pens, sharpies, and colored pencils, alongside small doodles or sketches. I had a hard time trying to work the scanner, having been absent in class during the CDSC lab, so, instead, I tried to scan it on my own in the Arts Building. The paper was the only scan I was happy with, however, it was hard to get the scanner to pick up on the small creases in the paper, as the scan kept coming up too bright. I chose my best scan and used a photo editor to try and make it less bright.

The textures I’m trying to convey are going to be messy. Looking around my room at my art making space, I’d like to include things like the wooden textures of my desk, the slick surface of my coffee mug that I frequently use, and the bristles of my paint brushes.  I feel as though these types of textures will make the comic more authentic even in a digital space. While I do believe it will be difficult to make a digital comic feel like a real piece of

The second attempt at making the scan less bright.

work in the physical world, I believe that the quality of scans and Photoshop’s ability to add things like shadows and a change in color will help to make this easier.

Overall, seeing the textures of all the items I’ve scanned has been interesting. The crumpled paper, while being pressed into the scanner, still had the same shapes, values, and general “paper texture” due to the quality of the scan itself. The wooden pencil, I was slightly disappointed in and plan on re-scanning in order to possibly get the wood grain in a better resolution; it was difficult because of how small the pencil was for me to do this on my first try. Hopefully, things like my leather pencil case will be able to have the same quality through scanning as it would be looking at them in the real world.

My first day of going to the CDSC I brought a patterned scrunchie, jewelry and, a receipt. I brought the scrunchie because it was polka dotted and red which I thought would be interesting to look at in Photoshop. After going to learn about the scanner I didn’t think I would like the shape and other characteristics that the scrunchie would translate to. I brought a necklace because I thought it would be good to layout a interesting shape, I chose not to go through with this because it would probably only show up as a squiggly line. I brought the receipt because it was text on paper that would be digital. I wasn’t against the idea of scanning text, I just thought I should find something more interesting than a receipt. Now, that I know more about the resolution and what will read well on a scanner I wanted to bring in something with more dimension and vibrant. After seeing the items other students brought I was inspired to bring something that would be more interesting characteristics that show off the material I am digitizing. I had a hard time looking for things at home to scan that would be interesting to look at, and I am still looking at more to add to make it more of a collage.  I decided to bring a embroidered jean jacket because of the different textures and colors that will be better to digitize. I thought that these elements were going to work well for this project because it is a textured image, so you would see it and know it was stitches but now it is digital. I like that the background of the embroidered images being the denim from the jacket. So to add to this I think I either want to bring something that matches the theme of wild life to bring together what it would look like if it were real. Or bring in more clothing to show more of the texture and details.

Scanned bag tag, Fall 2019.

I brought a golf bag tag with my name on it from Tacoma Golf & Country Club and a car wash stamp card to the CDSC. I brought these items because they were small and flat and could easily be scanned but they also provide a little information about myself. The bag tag will be in my comic collage because golf is one of my favorite sports to play and I enjoy playing in tournaments in the summer. My favorite tournament this summer that I played in was the PNGA mens amateur at Tacoma G&CC where I got the bag tag.

The car wash stamp card that I brought will also be in my collage because I frequently get my car washed and I think that’s a little piece of information about me that I want expressed in the collage. The stamp card will also have people guessing what kind of car I drive since my car will not be featured in the collage at all.

Scanned car wash stamp card, Fall 2019.

Some other items I am considering scanning are clothing items such as my favorite shirt or hoodie, one of my favorite golf polos, a WSU basketball jersey that I found at Goodwill in Port Orchard, my favorite pair of socks, and receipts from different restaurants that I enjoy going to. I’ve decided to scan these items because they are all different colors which I think would make my collage very interesting. These items also are very different from each other in terms of texture. For the clothing items especially I will be focusing on the different textures each clothing item has. It will be interesting to see how I organize the items in a sequential order. Although I have a good idea of what items I want to scan I have no idea how to place them in my collage just yet.

scan-3-1

Scanned photo of Ana Maria’s Hawaiian pineapple shirt by Ana Maria.

On our first day of scanning, I brought my Hawaiian pineapple shirt and a lace scarf. First, I just wanted to have items that had unique fabric texture and patterns. The dainty little pineapples on the shirt, as well as the buttons going down the shirt, hold a lot of character. I made a lot of fun memories while wearing the shirt so I figured I would tie it into my project somehow. The lace scarf was just mailed to me in a care package from my mom. To be honest, I probably will never wear the scarf, but it’s definitely something my mom would wear so I like it because it symbolizes her. The timing of me receiving the scarf was perfect! I’m excited to utilize the lace very up close so all of the details can be seen in my project.

Some other items I would like to scan for the project will include a couple matte stickers. I bought a cool sticker this summer when I was in South Lake Tahoe and I designed some cool stickers for Gannon Goldsworthy, which is the dorm I work/live in. I’m hoping that the scanner will capture the matte texture as opposed to looking like a basic vector graphic. Since I work for the Daily Evergreen, it might be cool to scan one of the first covers I designed; it would add a nice vintage newspaper texture I think. The only other items I can think of scanning at the moment are my keychains and maybe a couple keys. In my opinion, keys are very decorative without trying to be. Growing up, I used to wear my house hey on a necklace because I liked what it looked like so much. A scan will transfer the shiny and jagged details in the keys.

Scanned image of my Firefighter coin

The items I brought to the CDSC was a dollar bill, pop tart wrapper, and a tie. I choose these objects because I thought they would look interesting under a scanner that can make different parts of the images pop. The items I ended up scanning however was a crimson beaded necklace and a firefighters coin I got from my dad. I choose the necklace because it seemed like it could be a good idea for a type of border around another graphic and after scanning it, I think the metallic crimson turned out good and scanning it at different shapes could end up looking really nice as almost “panels” in my collage. As for the coin, I just thought it looked really cool and was curious to see how the graphic shown would end up looking under the scanner. Overall, it came out very detailed and you can still see all the raised graphic and background material on the coin. I probably won’t use this coin exactly but I definitely think I have other ones that are similar to it that I will use for my collage.

Scanned image of the Crimson bead necklace

As for the collage I plan on centering it around where I’m from, Seattle. I plan on bringing in a Seattle Seahawks jersey and other materials I have brought from home like my Seattle skyline flag. I believe the skyline will make a good background. I also plan on using my Mariners jersey as well because the class “jersey” style pattern will show up quite well as well. Along with those I plan on using random household objects I can find to create different pieces, exactly which though I haven’t decided yet. In the end,I hope my collage to be a sort of visual description of how I experience my times in Seattle when I go to Seahawks and Mariner games.
