What It Is Part 2

Picture Taken Outside On the Way to WSU

This reminds me of Barry’s book because Barry seems to me to be a loner contemplating on what Life is in general. It is a very vague thing and a lot of her thoughts though cynical mirror how I feel. In grade school you see all the kids that are better then you at something at you and you figure “why even try” this exposure continues deep into life as you have to witness people more successful and better than you every single day. Some people might think, but hey your drawings are good. Although Barry has similar thoughts to me, although art used to be a thing that would set you free, now you are bound by the chains of self doubt every piece you make is an excruciating experience of what people might think. It’s hard to find anything of yours worth value and you start to spiral into a thought chain of why any of anything matters anyway. Your thoughts lead to What Is It? What It is? I chose this scene because the yellow pedestrian logo is all alone, and I could see Barry using a cutout photo of this sign in her work.

Framing

tv_72ppiI took a picture of my television inside my apartment as I felt it was a great example of “framing” and how it frames the content and media that exists on that plane of entertainment. If you think of it as a sort of plane, the contents of the plane are constrained to exist only within the frames of the  borders and do not extend beyond them. The television may contain other frames within the frame, such as menus or guides or simply how images and media are divided but they ultimately only exist on the singular plane that is the square box they call their “home”. Imagine if a television was not constrained to its frame – would it “leak” everywhere, for lack of a better word, or simply exist entirely all at once? Frames divide our world so our brain can process and understand the divisions individually and separate A from B.

Framing

This picture of a building in Washington State University Campus is a great one to describe how framing work. Each brick is a frame, each window is a frame, and they all form the wall of the building that is a frame also. Reading the chapter about framing made me think how everything could be a frame for something smaller. The whole picture has it own frame. We can focus on each small detail that form that picture and find out that even the rails are frames.

Northside Resident Hall

I took a picture of my residence hall, which is Northside, because the windows are all examples of frames. Each window has its own specific frame to create the whole big “window wall.” Each window has an obvious border around it enclosing each frame. I think this is a great example of framing because of how many frames are created by the windows.

Inner Child

It would be ironic to walk into the art building and not find any creative pieces. On my way to class, I came across an isolated piece of art and I couldn’t help but think about Barry’s book. The painting is not a representation of a set figure or shape but it’s sort of the representation of our inner child. The painting is made up of many art boards that are stacked up on each other and each art board has its own entity. Similarly to Barry’s book, the painting does not follow a conventional structure, and the content of the painting exhibits a raw aliveness that seems to be drawn from the collective collection of memories and experiences as a child from part of the artist.

What it is P2

This picture kind of gave me the idea of ocean imagery, childhood, and creative inspiration. The idea of just letting the cool tone colors spiral into a circle reminds me of the freeness of the waves of the ocean and the fun act as being a child would be. This is a creative way to some how make a piece of art.

What it is!

When Barry talks about images, he personifies the state of images. To Barry the images have their own essence. The images become alive from the interpretation and meaning they are given as memories or creative works. He exclaims, “It’s alive in the way our memory is alive.” In a sense images are the embodiment of our inner child that has grown and gone through many different experiences that add up to our collective self. The images in page 14 are simple drawings that even a 7-year could draw but in Barry’s context they truly embody the message in the book.

Barry Pg. 14

The pages in the book are made up paper used in everyday life, not a special paper for drawing. Once again showing the simplicity throughout the book. It appears the images might have been made by hand and later scanned or they could have been made entirely in illustrator. Like on page 14 the drawings appeared to be drawn from a child’s imagination.

What It Is? Part 2

what-it-isI chose this picture of my wall in my bedroom at home because it represent the many different media used in the book. Also, I have decorated this wall with pictures and items from my childhood. It relates directly to her message of embracing your inner child and creativity. Some of the pictures on the wall are what I have drawn and others are printed material that I cut out. The wall is very similar to the pages in the book that are in the section in between the written story parts.

Point, Line, Plane

20160905_135546This box of Kleenex reminded me of Point, Line and Plane from Graphic Design, The New Basics due to its intricate patterns that consist of a bunch of geometric points that make a lot of jagged lines. Those lines are placed in side by side to create shapes, which are also known as planes. The boxy textures on this tissue box remind me of  some old 8 bit games like Mario or Pac Man, and some of the quilts my grandma used to have.

What It I? Part 2

FullSizeRender.jpg

This comic strip correlates with my childhood and going fishing frequently. As a child my parents taught me to fit so I would never have to worry about food. This in relation to Barry’s photo on page 15 responses well to this. In the picture it is expressed as the brain is the stomach and I believed this to be the idea of knowledge. When really its more. You can see Barry’s example of feeding the brain as well as the idea of teaching the brain to feed. This comic is a great example for my childhood and her idea on page 15. Along with that you get the idea of catching the biggest one. I remember as a child we always wanted to get the biggest one of anything. So not only does this comic translate well with the picture on page 15 and my childhood but it resembles child overall.
