Color

color

Artwork I bought from Sketch Wednesday. Artist Unknown.

I chose this image of artwork that I bought because I believe it is a good representation of color. It includes a good variety of color and hue. Some of the hues in the image are lighter than others where more light was being reflected. Also, there are darker parts of the image where light is being absorbed. Although these areas are the same color they appear differently depending on the saturation level. The main colors used are two of the primary colors, red and blue. Through the mixer of these colors there is a faint presence of the color purple which is a secondary color.

Rhythm and Balance

piano-picture-full

Picture Taken and Edited by yours truly

I took this picture of my piano and edited it a little to represent rhythm and balance. Like the books says when we think of rhythm it’s hard not to think of sound and music. So when I looked at my piano I was like there is a beautiful set rhythm and pattern that happens with the keys when I shot it with the correct framing I was able to achieve a sense of balance by having two black keys on each side of the frame. I still wanted to incorporate a sense of movement into the photo so I gave it a little bit of tilt. I think that the way I edited the photo makes it have more rhythm because of the graphic nature of the image, the white from the light on top of the black keys helps to flavor the pattern so it’s not as monotonous.

Gestalt Principles

resized-sao-72ppi

Taken From the SAO Sakura Con Exclusive Poster

I chose this poster of the upcoming Sword Art Online film because I think it makes a great use of the Gestalt Principles. The simplicity in the way this poster is framed is nice although the Main image is bordered at the top giving a nice simple three rectangle shape with the full bleed on the sides of the image implying that this imaginary world continues past our eyes. Within the main image itself in the background we see one single continuous shape made of three more simple and similar circles. Within each of those circles as well the proximity of the shapes inside of the circles which are fragmented and broken make our brains complete the circle. Even though the main characters come in front of the circles, which make them stand out and contrast beautifully to their background, our brain makes the circles continue behind them our brains want to close that shape. Another great thing is the continuity that happens between the two characters themselves, they turn into one negative shape with the way they overlap. The white of their shirts continues in our minds and create a beautiful sideways S shape. The way these characters become one shape is great symbolism because the two characters are a couple in the show. Outside of the main picture in the negative space is where all the information is located and like the book had stated in there is some white space that is just left to be which makes this piece look more elegant.

Rhythm and Balance

flash

My boyfriend’s Flash shirt.

I took a picture of my boyfriend’s Flash shirt because it was a good example of balance. Both the shirt’s shape and print use symmetry. On the print, the shirt uses a variety of elements that all give balance to the shirt: the polygonal tile pattern, the symmetrical muscle definition, the lower lightning bolts on each side, and the central lightning bolt encased in the circle.

Rhythm and Balance

I took this picture this summer at home (Lisbon, Portugal). This is one the most important historical places in Portugal and i think it represent the idea of rhythm and balance.

Rhythm because of the lines on the floor that alters from black to white. The arches in the palace also create a rhythm in the picture because of their repetitive appearance.

The balance is formed by the contrast of two mainimg_3152 things:

1) The black and white lines on the ground.

2) The sky and the ground separated by the palace that looks like a line from the distance that the picture was taken.

I also notices the fountain with a circular shape right in the middle of the picture that creates balance by it position and shape.

Views From Below – Taken at Kamiak Butte

I took this picture on Monday at Kamiak Butte. I think it represents rhythm and balance because of a few different things I noticed from the reading. I notice rhythm from the way the trees come in from the edges and are angled towards the sky as if they are pointing at it, making the sky the focal point. Balance is formed by the contrast between the dark trees and the light sky. Another aspect that shows balance is that the gap in the trees is replaced by a cloud which balances out the left and right sides.

Rhythm & Balance

Picture taken while I was working at the Holiday Inn Express in Pullman 9/14

This carpet reminded me of Balance due to its symmetrical and even distribution of space. It also reminded me of rhythm due to the fact that this pattern is repeated throughout the entire hallway, so its constantly repeating. The curly lines that make up this design seem like they’re in some way directly related to art nouveau.

Rhythm and Balance

I was looking through some of my old photos I took over the summer and came across this one. I think it is a great example of rhythm and balance. First of all, the different textures in the water and sky shows a lot of rhythm. Also the photograph resembles an asymmetrical design through the many contrasts in light and lets the viewers eye to wander throughout the page while still achieving balance and overall stability. It keeps the viewer interested in the image while they get lost in the many elements of the picture. I also really like the repetition of the different wires that stretch across the entire image.

Scale

I really enjoy this photo I took while on a boat ride in New York City this summer. I think it is a great example of scale because the boat and the Statue of Liberty differ in size so much. The Statue of Liberty is huge but I didn’t expect it to be as big as it was when I got up close. The boat gives you a great representation of the sense of depth and how big the Statue of Liberty actually is.

Scale

image1-2

Photo taken by me of former co-worker; Travis

Above is a picture I took during the summer that I believe represents scale quite well. According to Lupton and Phillips, “No matter what size your work will ultimately be, it must have its own sense of scale”. In this particular case, the sense of scale is my co-worker at the top of the tree. Being that the picture was taken from a good distance, having Travis up there gives the audience a solid sense of depth; essentially an idea of how high up he might be. The viewer also gets an impression of the size of the log he has just cut  as well as the tree he has scaled (no pun intended).
