Rhythm and Balance

Poster for the HBO television program Silicon Valley, created by Mike Judge

I took this photo of this poster in my apartment because I really believe it represents rhythm and balance quite well. Like Lupon’s book says, symmetry is a way to achieve balance within a given subject. In this image of the poster for the HBO show Silicon Valley, there are actually two instances of symmetry. Firstly, notice the contrasting shades on the top and bottom of the page. There is virtually a 50/50 split up of the white and dark shading; creating an eye-pleasing balance that doesn’t exclude any content from within the frames. The second instance of symmetry is the balance of the characters that are all posing the same way. Although the individuals aren’t identical, the specific pose, outfitting, and lighting/shading conveys the notion of…stability in a sense.
